vSphere 4.1 Licensing Core/CPU/Socket ?

Re: vSphere 4.1 Licensing Core/CPU/Socket ?
I don't know what the guy, calculating the costs in the AMD article was smoking at the time he wrote that article , but ESX(i) it is definitely licenses per CPU socket. (see Troy's link)

What you need is:
for 1 socket with up to 6 cores: either 1 Standard or 1 Enterprise license
for 1 socket with up to 12 cores: 1 Advanced or 1 Enterprise Plus license
You can also combine licenses (e.g. 2 Enterprise licenses) to support 12 cores, however - from a cost perspective - this may not make much sense.

in addition the  CPU licenses, don't forget about the vCenter Server license:
vCenter Server Foundation: for up to 3 hosts
vCenter Standard: unlimited host (just limited by the max. supported hosts)
